In Venice, titles of nobility are not recognized. We were a Republic, and the highest office of the land was that of the ‘Doge,’ which carried along with it heavy burdens, including a ‘blinding’ or at most extreme ‘death’ to those who caused corruption.  We also had several Doges that were punished by angry mobs of Venetian republicans.
